Rolls of Imitation Gold Leaf

Imitation Gold Leaf Rolls—also known as Dutch Metal Ribbon Leaf—are produced by mounting individual sheets of composition metal leaf onto a continuous backing paper, creating an efficient roll format for seamless application across large surfaces. Made from a brass alloy of copper and zinc, this leaf provides a warm, gold-like metallic finish while offering a cost-effective alternative to genuine gold.
Color 2.5 Imitation Gold Leaf Rolls by Nazionale (Italy) are crafted to the highest European standards and are especially well suited for large-scale gilding projects such as walls, ceilings, architectural elements, and long linear surfaces. The continuous roll format can reduce application labor by up to 50%, making it a preferred choice for production environments and expansive decorative work.
Each roll is constructed by placing individual leaves measuring 6 1/8" x 6 1/8" onto a continuous backing with an approximate 2 mm overlap, creating a smooth, consistent metallic surface when applied. This construction allows for easy alignment, making it simple to achieve either a grid pattern or brick layout depending on the desired aesthetic.
Available formats include:
- N05MAS/G — 5 meter sample roll, approx. 3 sq. ft. coverage
- N50MAS/G — 50 meter master roll (164 ft.), approx. 82 sq. ft. coverage
- N75MAS/G — 75 meter master roll (246 ft.), approx. 123 sq. ft. coverage
Pre-cut widths are also available, and rolls can be easily cut down to custom sizes as needed. When trimmed, both the leaf and backing paper are cut together, producing a clean, precise edge for detailed or specialized applications.
Imitation Gold Leaf Rolls are particularly well suited for: • Large-scale walls and ceiling applications • Architectural paneling and decorative finishes • Long moldings, trim, and borders • Signage and commercial work • Projects requiring speed, consistency, and reduced seams
Because the leaf is supported by a backing, it can be handled directly without the use of a gilder’s tip. During application, the leaf is pressed onto a properly prepared adhesive surface, and the backing is then lifted away to reveal a continuous gold-like finish.
Due to the presence of wax residue from the rolling process, water-based topcoats are not recommended, as they may not properly adhere to the surface. Oil-based or solvent-based sealers are more suitable and are strongly recommended, as imitation gold leaf will naturally oxidize and tarnish over time if left unprotected.
Like all metal leaf products, imitation gold leaf rolls should be stored in a stable environment, protected from excessive heat, cold, or humidity to maintain proper adhesion between the leaf and backing.
