Clay (Bole)

Clay (Bole): An exceptional gilded surface is a direct result of the application of the finest gilder's bole. Clay helps to give special luster to gilded surfaces and make them long-lasting. Our selection of clays include the prime burnishing clays from Germany and France, in both dry cone and premixed (dissolved in water) forms. All of these burnishing clays must be mixed with glue before applying.

An exceptional gilded surface is the result of careful preparation using high-quality gilder’s clay, commonly referred to as bole. Applied over the gesso layer during traditional water gilding, bole provides a smooth, slightly absorbent surface that enhances the adhesion of gold leaf while contributing to the rich luster and depth associated with burnished gilding. The color of the bole can also influence the warmth and tone of the finished gilded surface.

Sepp Leaf Products offers a selection of premium burnishing clays from Germany and France, including Kölner Burnishing Clay, Kölner Poliment, LeFranc Clay, and Selhamin Clay. These clays are available in both dry cone form and premixed formulations (dissolved in water). Before application, burnishing clays must be properly mixed with glue to create the traditional bole used in water gilding preparation.
