Damar Varnish

Damar varnish is a traditional finishing varnish commonly used in decorative arts and gilding applications. In gilded glass work, it is often used to create embossed matte centers, providing a subtle textured effect that contrasts with the brilliance of surrounding gold leaf.

Gilders Damar Varnish is a thick-bodied, liquefied damar gum traditionally used in decorative arts, gilding, and reverse glass work. It is commonly used for picture adhesion and center embossing, where it helps create raised, matte effects that contrast beautifully with the brilliance of surrounding gold leaf.

Damar does not dry on its own and must be combined with varnish to properly set and dry. For lithograph or canvas adhesion, mix Damar and varnish 50/50. For embossing, add Res-n-Gel as a thickener, using approximately equal parts Damar, varnish, and Res-n-Gel to achieve the desired consistency.

Long used by gilders, sign painters, and decorative artists, Gilders Damar Varnish is especially useful for creating depth, texture, and distinctive effects in reverse glass gilding and ornamental work.
