Quick Rubbing Varnish
Quick Rubbing Varnish is a traditional alkyd resin varnish used in gilding and decorative finishing applications. It is commonly used to create matte centers in window gilding, providing contrast against the brilliance of surrounding gold leaf. The varnish cures quickly, typically within 1–3 hours, making it well suited for projects that require a faster turnaround.
Amber in color, Quick Rubbing Varnish is often used as an undercoat for finishing surfaces, for mixing colors, or as a quick gold size. It is packaged at a brushable consistency and may be thinned for application with up to 10% turpentine or mineral spirits if desired. Once applied, the surface can typically be rubbed out after 24 hours at approximately 77°F (25°C). Tools and brushes can be cleaned using mineral spirits.
